Maui's Conservation-Focused Dive Company: Join Us to Protect Our Oceans

At Maui Pacific Divers, we believe that understanding and caring for our ocean go hand in hand. That's why everything we do is deeply personal, focused on creating unique and sustainable dive and snorkel experiences on Maui.

Unlike typical dive operations that follow the same routes daily with large groups, we hand-craft each of our charters. This personalized approach allows us to provide you with the exact underwater adventure you're seeking while also dedicating time to vital ocean conservation efforts on the days between our trips.

Our Commitment to Maui's Marine Environment:

We're proud to partner with leading Maui conservation nonprofits like the Pacific Whale Foundation and the Maui Nui Marine Resource Council to actively care for our precious reefs.

Supporting Marine Research After the Lahaina Fire:

Following the devastating Lahaina Fire, we quickly joined forces with the Pacific Whale Foundation. Recognizing the urgent need to assess the impact on the local marine ecosystem, we provided crucial boat and scuba support. This enabled their team to gather essential weekly data off the coast of Lahaina, alongside a control study at Olowalu, known as Maui’s Mother Reef. While initial observations suggested a temporary decrease in larger reef inhabitants like white tip reef sharks, the encouraging primary finding was the resilience of the reef.

Active Reef Cleanup at Keoneʻōʻio (La Perouse Bay):

Our commitment extends beyond research to direct action. Our partnership with Pacific Whale Foundation transitioned to reef cleanup dives, particularly at the beautiful Keoneʻōʻio Bay (La Perouse) in South Maui. This coastline has historically suffered from discarded fishing hooks and lines snagging on the delicate coral. Through collaborative efforts with Pacific Whale Foundation staff, skilled divers, and passionate conservationists, we've successfully removed over 2700 pounds of harmful lead, fishing line, and other marine debris.

Our Team's Deep Connection to Conservation:

Our dedication to the ocean runs deep within our team. Captain JJ, our resident marine scientist, was originally part of the Pacific Whale Foundation's Conservation Team. His expertise and passion for marine life are invaluable to our guests and our conservation initiatives.

Adding another layer of sustainability, Captain Mikal is ingeniously melting down the recovered lead to create our dive weights. He's even developing custom molds, with the exciting prospect of offering recycled lead dive weights shaped like your favorite marine creatures in the near future!

Championing Reef Health with Maui Nui Marine Resource Council:

The Maui Nui Marine Resource Council is a constant champion for Maui's reef health and ocean water quality, especially in our beloved Ma’alaea Bay. Customer service  Maggie Sutrov's initial involvement with this vital organization began through her work as an art teacher. She created an engaging virtual field trip and video art lesson for Maui schools, bringing ocean conservation into the classroom. Maggie also uses her artistic talents to document their crucial work, painting live during oyster surveys aimed at improving harbor water quality and during vetiver plantings designed to reduce sediment runoff. Today, we proudly support MNMRC by providing boat access for their coral outplanting projects, as well as water testing and maintenance for their Aqualink data collection buoy.

Beyond her role at Maui Pacific Divers, Maggie continues to connect Maui youth with the ocean through art. Her recent collaboration with the Maui High Marine Science class showcased student artwork to illuminate their learning and foster a deeper connection to the underwater world.

Supporting Marine Research on Maui:

We are committed to assisting researchers dedicated to understanding and protecting Maui's marine ecosystems. Whether it's providing transportation for the Maui Nui Marine Seabird Recovery Project to survey seabirds nesting at Molokini or offering our boat to Dr. Orion McCarthy from Scripps Institute of Oceanography for 3D imaging of Maui’s coral reefs, we are always eager to support their vital work and learn from their expertise.

Looking Towards the Future: Empowering Maui's Youth:

Maui Pacific Divers is constantly evolving to address the evolving conservation needs of our island. Our next significant project focuses on empowering Maui youth to experience the underwater world firsthand. By providing them with the necessary skills to breathe underwater, we believe the ocean itself will inspire the next generation of passionate marine conservationists.
