Unveiling Scuba's Depths: The Discover Scuba Diving Experience

Can I scuba dive without being certified?

The short answer is, YES. But, as you would imagine there’s a little more to it than jumping in the water. In fact, there’s a program designed just for people who wish to experience scuba diving safely and without yet being certified. It’s called Discover Scuba Diving, or DSD for short.

Discover Scuba Diving experiences are perfect for those who think they might want to become divers, but aren’t ready to commit to a full Open Water course.

Discover Scuba Diving is also great for non-divers visiting Maui, who want to experience Maui's spectacular reefs in a new and exciting way. We all love snorkeling. You get to peer into the underwater world. When you scuba dive, you are fully immersed and exploring the reef!  Often, non-divers visit our beautiful island with a group of scuba diving friends. DSD is the perfect way to share in the fun!

Maui Adventure

What exactly is a Discover Scuba Diving Experience?

As mentioned, DSD is a program created for non-divers. The program involves learning several skills, and some basic diving theory. When you book your trip, you will gain access to a 20 minute online course that introduces the concepts ahead of your dive.  Once on the boat, we'll go over it all with you again personally, along with an introduction to the equipment you’ll be using. This way your first time breathing underwater feels very comfortable.

Discover Scuba Diving is not a certification course, although many of the skills are the same. Once you’ve completed your DSD, you’ll be qualified to go on similar guided dives. For safety, depths are limited to 40’ and you must dive with a qualified instructor.

Maui offers many spectacular dive sites that are shallower than 40’—Mala Warf for example. Our warm, calm, clear water is perfect for new divers. It’ll leave you dreaming about your next opportunity to get underwater with us.

A Typical Discover Scuba Diving Day

Your day will begin with boarding our boat. On the way to the first dive site, your instructor will explain the various skills, equipment and safety considerations every diver needs to know. These include equipment use, how to clear your ears and how to remove water from your mask while underwater. You will learn the most important rule in diving—to breathe continuously and to never hold your breath.

These skills aren’t hard to learn and you’ll have plenty of time to ask questions before getting wet. Your first in-water experience will be at a calm dive site perfect for your first scuba experience. Here, you’ll take your first underwater breaths, and begin practicing the skills you were introduced to on the surface.

Once comfortable, you and your instructor will head deeper for your first “real” dive! You’ll almost certainly be hooked. Many divers join us over and over for guided DSD experiences, but most will go one to become fully certified Open Water divers.

Maui is the perfect DSD location

Maui is known the throughout the world for its natural beauty and diverse ocean ecosystem. Our water is warm and we enjoy excellent diving conditions year round. On your very first dive, you’ll see our reefs up close and encounter colorful, tropical fish and possibly larger species like turtles and other Hawaiian inhabitants.  Unlike many other dive boats, you get to go on two dives during your DSD!  The first dive allows you to practice the skills and then explore the dive site.  With the second dive, you get to explore a second location, taking in more of the wonder of the underwater world!

You’ll fall in love with our world beneath the waves.

After Your Discover Scuba Diving Experience

Congratulations! You’ve just taken the first steps, er, fin kicks, in a journey that will last a lifetime. Believe it or not, what you learned during your DSD is the foundation for every future dive. In fact, by completing your Discover Scuba Diving Experience, you will have also completed Dive #1 toward your Open Water Diver Certification!

Many times, our DSD divers are so taken by their first underwater encounters, they go on to earn their Open Water Certification in the following days.
